Workshop Descriptions
Orientation
This Tuesday morning workshop introduces you to Experience Unlimited,
and specifically the Inland Empire Chapter. Students will learn about
its purpose, services offered, regulations, requirements, and
other workshops. The Orientation workshop initiates the membership
process.
Prerequisites: Prospective members must bring the following items with them to the Orientation Workshop:
- a copy of their current resume
- a sample job listing (ad) that describes the type of position they are seeking
- proof of their right to work in the United States. This can be in any one of the four forms:
- driver's license AND Social Security card
- birth certificate
- passport
- alien registration card
Attendance is required to be a member. Professional attire is a must during all EU activities on and off premises.
Resume Writing This workshop
is designed to assist individuals in fine-tuning their resumes.
Students will not actually write their resume during the workshop, but
will be given many tips, suggestions and ideas on how to write or
revise it. This workshop features resume strategies, formats, do's, don'ts, and samples.
The instructors will:
- give instruction and insight about what employers expect in a professional resume.
- assist in correcting your mistakes and areas in your resume that are weak and unclear.
- suggest ways to modify your resume, where appropriate, and based on your background.
- offer valuable suggestions to further showcase your strongest assets and experience.
- show you how to write a resume that addresses the employer’s needs.
Students will also be given useful information about how to write
effective cover letters. A good cover letter introduces you and your
resume and is a very important piece of the job search process.
Prerequisites: Completion of the Orientation Workshop. Students are also required to submit a copy of their current resume.
Attendance is required to be a member. Professional attire is a must during all EU activities on and off premises.
Electronic Resumes Internet
Recruiting has altered the fundamental nature of the job search. The
widespread popularity of Internet Job Boards inundates Human Resource
professionals with hundreds of relevant and irrelevant resumes for each
job posting. This mismatched pool of resumes must be pared down to a
manageable number of job candidates that closely matches the job
requirements. The instructors will explain the concept of the online
resume, the technology used by employers to receive, scan and read the
resumes of job applicants, and offer other helpful tips.
Students will learn about the need for and use of keywords, how to
convert and format a paper resume to one that can be sent
electronically. When necessary, the instructors will help a student
establish a Hotmail account with which to send and receive electronic
resumes.
Prerequisites: Completion of the Orientation and Resume
Writing Workshops. Students are also required to bring a copy of their
current resume with them.
Attendance is required to be a member. Professional attire is a must during all EU activities on and off premises.
Interviewing Techniques
This workshop is presented in two parts and covers the theory and
practice of interviewing. It is designed to give students a better
understanding of the significance of the interview in the overall
process that employers use to determine the suitability of a candidate
for employment.
Students participate in mock interviews with questions posed
by the workshop instructors. This part of the workshop is videotaped.
After the interview, the tape is played back as a tool for analyzing
one's interviewing skills and techniques. The size of this workshop is
limited.
Prerequisites: Completion of the Orientation and Resume
Writing Workshops. Students are also required to submit a copy of their
current resume and a sample job listing (ad) that describes the type of
position they are seeking. These must be submitted at the time the
student attends Orientation. Workshop leaders prepare interview
questions based on the students’ resumes and job listings (ads).
Attendance is required to be a member. Professional attire is a must during all EU activities on and off premises.
Networking
Instructors with knowledge of proven networking techniques
lead the group through practical exercises on topics such as marketing
their skills through a resume and employment application, locating and
developing job openings, how to use networking to secure interviews,
and tips for retaining a job. The workshop setting also provides an
opportunity for the participants to share techniques they have found
effective in looking for a job.
